Institut Imagine is a leading French institute for research and patient care in genetic and rare diseases, located on the Necker-Enfants Malades campus in Paris. Independent media coverage has described it as “the first center of genetic disease research in Europe” and emphasized its increasingly large fundraising and public-private support model.[1][2][3] According to Financial Times, in 2023 Institut Imagine had a budget of about €80.3 million, of which around €34.5 million came from public funding.[4]
Created in 2007 and supported by the foundation of the same name, Institut Imagine combines laboratory research, clinical activities, training, and public outreach in a single institution under a unique model.[5][6][7][8][9] It brings together multiple research teams, core facilities, and clinical reference centres for rare diseases (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.[10]). The six founding members of Fondation Imagine are INSERM, Assistance publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), Paris-Descartes University (currently Paris-Cité University), the French Muscular Dystrophy Association, Fondation des Hôpitaux, and the City of Paris.[11] In 2011, Imagine became one of the first Instituts hospitalo-universitaires (IHU) established in France.[12] Imagine's funding model relies on public funding from the French state and health institutions, as well as competitive research grants and private philanthropy.[4][13][14] The institute raises additional support through fundraising efforts, which have included charity auctions and other public campaigns.[3][15][16]
From 2007 to 2013, the research teams of Institut Imagine were spread across the campus of the Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital, but since early 2014, they have been grouped in a dedicated building designed by Jean Nouvel and Bernard Valéro on the same campus.[17][18][19] The building has been recognized for combining multiple research and clinical functions and features screen-printed façades decorated with enlarged patterns inspired by a DNA sequence.[20][21] Currently, the institute hosts 24 research laboratories.[22]
In 2025, Bana Jabri succeeded Stanislas Lyonnet as the director of Institut Imagine.[23][24]
