Gerald Louis Burke, MD (born (1906-12-29)29 December 1906) was a Canadian medical researcher, academic, and author of "Backache from Occiput to Coccyx", and contributor to "Suspensionthérapie et pouliethérapie - Guide pratique by Bernard Grumler, published by Sauramps Médical. Burke was also a pioneer in the metallurgical refinement, manufacture and use of tantalum metal plates and fasteners for the repair of bone fractures.

Later career

Burke's early research was focused on the use of metals in surgery, and his pioneering research was published under "The Corrosion of Metals in Tissues; an Introduction to Tantalum", published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, 1940 Aug;43(2). Burke published "On Congenital Dislocation of the Hip" in The Bone and Joint Journal, November, 1951. Burke's discovery of the value of biologically inert metals like tantalum and titanium, and his engineering of the manufacturing processes, led to the now widely accepted use of these metals in orthopaedic surgery and dentistry.

Burke wrote and published in 1964 "Backache from Occiput to Coccyx", shedding light on a baffling and challenging medical issue. His text was immensely successful and subsequently published in 6 printings.
