Intellectus fidei

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Intellectus fidei, also fides quaerens intellectum, a concept from scholasticism, is understood and translated as insight through faith. This can be interpreted in different ways, depending on meanings of reason and/or logos:

  1. as the insight into the tenets of faith with the help of largely independent reason (“credo ut intelligam,” I believe so that I may understand; Anselm of Canterbury and his Proslogion)
  2. as knowledge through and with the help of faith as a prerequisite for knowledge (Thomas Aquinas)

Theories of visions of God and proofs of God's existence within the framework of natural theology place particular emphasis on this question.
