International Conducting Competition Rotterdam

The International Conducting Competition Rotterdam (ICCR) is a competition for conductors between 23 and 35 years old. It takes place every three years in De Doelen, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. ICCR is organised in collaboration with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra [1], Concertgebouw De Doelen and Stichting Droom en Daad. [2]

165 conductors from 50 different countries applied for the first edition of the competition, which will take place in spring 2022.[3] [4] During the selection rounds in June 2021 six conductors will be selected to participate in the competition.

Formula The six selected conductors will work with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Sinfonia Rotterdam, Doelen Ensemble, Rotterdam Symphony Chorus and Budapest Festival Orchestra. The competition comprises six separate rounds with various themes, such as classical, contemporary and opera. In addition, an open-air round will be held in the centre of Rotterdam.

Jury The jury of the first edition of ICCR will include the conductors: Iván Fischer, Jane Glover, Wayne Marshall, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Frank Ollu, Lahav Shani, Anja Bihlmaier Ed Spanjaard, Nathalie Stutzmann, Krzysztof Urbański and Xian Zhang, alongside the composers Michel van der Aa and James MacMillan, musicians Roberta Alexander and Ton Koopman and managers Deborah Borda (CEO New York Philharmonic), Ara Guzelimian (former CEO Carnagie Hall), Sophie de Lint (director Dutch National Opera) and Elmar Weingarten (former intendant of Berlin Philharmoniker).

Prizes A prize will be awarded to the best specialist per round. In addition, one conductor will receive the Grand Prix for the best all-rounder. Each prize will amount to €10.000. As part of the prize, the winners will receive support in their career development for a period of three years. This will include engagements with orchestras, masterclasses and assistance with PR and the search for an impresario.
