International Hub for Sustainable Development

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The International Hub for a Sustainable Development (HIDS) is a sustainable, smart district being planned in the city of Campinas, in the São Paulo, Brazil.[1][2] [3][4]

HIDS was created to meet the sustainability goals of Agenda 2030's 17 Sustainable development goals (ODS) and to benefit the Metropolitan region of Campinas[5][6].

History and planning[edit]

In 2013, Unicamp acquired Fazenda Argentina, an area of 1.4 million square meters, adjacent to the University campus.[7] Originally, HIDS was conceived as a structure to be created at Fazenda Argentina and integrated with Unicamp's campus.[8] In the Strategic Master Plan (2018), prepared by the Campinas City Hall, the Ciatec 2 region is identified as a Strategic Development Pole for the municipality of Campinas. Upon learning of the HIDS project, the City of Campinas became a partner intending to recover the original High Technology Pole project (an area 8.8 million square meters in size), which has part of Unicamp.[9][10] As a result, the new district will have 11.3 million square meters, occupying the Unicamp campus,PUC-Campinas, the Facamp and Instituto ELDORADO areas, and the Campinas High Technology Pole 2 area (Ciatec 2).[11]

Through an agreement signed in March 2020 with Inter-American Development Bank (BID), both the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS) and a Brazilian urban planning team will be hired to develop the project in collaboration with a local team. The local team is made of professors and graduate students from Unicamp and PUC-Campinas, along with civil planners from the City of Campinas, supported by Unicamp's Executive Board of Integrated Planning (DEPI).[12][13][14][15][16][17][18] The Urban Project will be built with the support and participation of the community.[19]

Objectives[edit]

The proposal for an International Hub for Sustainable Development is to is to bring experts together to figure out the best practices for sustainable development.[20] HIDS is also planned as a complex of living lab[21] where new technologies, strategies, and products for sustainable development can be created and tested."[22][23]

Examples of living laboratories that are being devised include: food cycle; zero waste; sustainability assessment; and rational use of water – a project that has already started with the creation of the Brazilian Water Research Center, a partnership between Sanasa (Water and Sanitation Supply Company), Unicamp and Fapesp.[24][25][26][27]
