7Weaves Social Private Limited, headquartered in Guwahati, Assam, India is a social enterprise in the sustainable apparel and fashion industry.[1] Founded by social entrepreneurs Mandakini Gogoi, Rituraj Dewan and Uma Madhavan in 2017,[2][3] 7Weaves is an integrated textile and garment manufacturer operating in the bio-diverse Loharghat Forest Range of Kamrup district.[4][5][6] It has the stated mission of providing sustainable livelihoods to forest-dependent indigenous communities through the integration of their village economy with the global ethical fashion market[7]

The 7Weaves model[edit]

7Weaves supplies Eri silk products to global fashion brands in Western countries[8] such as Germany, France, Belgium and Australia,[7] while providing sustainable livelihoods to the forest-dependent communities who have traditional knowledge in sericulture and handloom.[5][9] 7Weaves provided guaranteed work for artisans at a fixed monthly emolument for the whole year, and redistributed 50 percent of its annual profits to the artisans and other players in the supply chain.[1][10][11]

7Weaves stated aim is also to help preserve the rich biodiversity of Assam by making the indigenous people more dependent on the forest, so that these communities would preserve the forest.[7][10] Eri silk is manufactured without killing the silk worm and 7Weaves claimed that only natural dyes were used by it in coloring the fabric.[12][9]

The customers of 7Weaves are mostly from the upper strata of society, who have high disposable income and were eco-conscious.[13]

7Weaves and its artisans work with global slow fashion brands[3] (in contrast to fast fashion) to showcase a collection in fashion shows and trade fairs.[1] 7Weaves was also accepted into the Maison d’Exceptions, of Première Vision Paris, 2020.[14][15][6]

Awards and accolades[edit]

7Weaves has been described as an innovative social experiment,[12] a social innovation, and as a promising sustainable business model.[16] Analysts said that ventures such as 7Weaves have much more to offer than just economic values.[17][18]

It was also described as an actor in the recent trend towards slow fashion[19][20] as it dealt in sustainably sourced fair trade fabrics that were long-lasting and locally produced, while upholding traditional values, preservation of ecosystem, source diversity, and responsible business practices.[16][18]

In 2019, 7Weaves received the National Award from the Union Minister of Textiles and the Union Minister, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, for its contribution to textile and handlooms.[1][4]
