The International Institute of Business Analysis™ (IIBA®) is a non-profit professional association formed in October 2003 with the purpose of supporting and promoting the discipline of business analysis,[1] working to maintain the global standards and certifications for the practice.[2]

Overview[edit]

IIBA shapes the practice of business analysis to achieve better enterprise outcomes.[3] It has over 30,000 members in 120 chapters.[4]

Members perform a variety of roles within organizations, including business analysis, requirements engineering, quality analysis, project management, and technical architecture.[5] They have access to several business analysis resources and industry events through their local IIBA chapter.[6]

IIBA develops A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK Guide), a framework describing what business analysis is, the tasks performed as part of business analysis, and the relevant techniques and competencies.[7]

History[edit]

At the beginning of the 21st century, many large organizations with existing business analysis practices were calling for a common set of standards, leading to the creation of IIBA.[8] IIBA was founded in 2003 with 28 founding members representing 21 different organizations in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.[9]

The IIBA Body of Knowledge Committee was formed in 2004 to provide a global standard for the practice of business analysis. In 2005, the first version of the BABOK Guide was released and the Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) certification program was implemented.[10]

The first ever organized conference dedicated to business analysis was organized by IIBA, British Computer Society (BCS), and AssistKD.[11]

Certifications[edit]

The highest level of certification offered in the business analysis profession is the CBAP designation,[12][13][14] which recognizes seasoned business analysis professionals with over five years of practical business analysis work experience[15] and a minimum of 7,500 hours of qualifying work experience in the last 10 years.[16] Other certifications offered by IIBA include:

  • Entry Certificate in Business Analysis (ECBA)
  • Certification of Capability in Business Analysis (CCBA)
  • Cybersecurity Analysis (IIBA-CCA)
  • Agile Analysis Certification (IIBA-AAC)
  • Business Data Analytics (IIBA-CBDA)
  • Product Ownership Analysis (IIBA-CPOA)

IIBA delivers core and specialized certification exams online.[17]

Standards and Publications[edit]

Several standards and publications have been developed by IIBA in the field of business analysis:

  • The Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK Guide) outlines the knowledge and skills required to be an effective business analysis professional, including six knowledge areas covering the key elements of business analysis.[18]
  • The Agile Extension to the BABOK Guide explains the knowledge and skills outlined in the BABOK Guide within the context of agile software development and agile methods.[19]
  • The Business Analysis Core Concept Model (BACCM) produces a common language for the profession, defining six key concepts essential to business analysis.[20]
  • The Guide to Business Data Analytics describes the concepts and tasks of business data analytics and how they relate to the practice of business analysis.[21]
  • The Guide to Product Ownership Analysis explores the best practices that teams use to create and deliver products and services for their customers and stakeholders.[22]
  • The Strategy to Execution Framework forms the bridge between strategic planning and implementation, setting the foundations for a business-led change program or transformation program.[23]
  • The Business Analysis Competency Model identifies the skills, abilities, and knowledge that business analysis professionals require to be successful and serves as an assessment tool.[24]
  • The Business Analysis Standard defines the core, fundamental practices for effective business analysis and is an abridged form of the concepts found in the BABOK Guide.[25]

Types of Membership[edit]

IIBA offers four types of membership:

  • Individual members can access IIBA standards and resources.[26]
