Into the Fire is an upcoming action-adventure survival video game developed and published by Polish studio Starward Industries. The game is set on the fictional Dante's Archipelago, where players carry out rescue missions during a volcanic catastrophe. Gameplay is structured around time-limited extraction runs in which players fight fires, search for survivors and animals, manage limited resources, and return to a base camp.[1][2] It is planned for release in early access for PC via Steam and GOG in 2026.[3][4] The project was originally announced as Dante's Ring before being renamed in March 2025.[5][6]
Premise
Into the Fire takes place on Dante's Archipelago, an island setting affected by an ongoing volcanic disaster. The player controls a rescue worker who enters hazardous areas to locate survivors, save animals, and recover supplies before conditions become too dangerous.[1][2] The setting combines disaster fiction with supernatural elements, including volcanic myths, rituals, unexplained phenomena, and hostile fire-related entities.[2][7][6]
Gameplay
Into the Fire is a single-player extraction survival game. Missions require the player to enter dangerous zones, fight spreading fires, rescue people and animals, and return to safety before escape routes are cut off.[1][2][4] Hazards include volcanic fires, lava, earthquakes, pyroclastic flows, volcanic bombs, ash storms, and unstable terrain.[1][4]
Players use firefighting tools and retro-futuristic equipment, including water cannons, fire-extinguishing weapons, axes, and devices such as a seismograph.[7][6] Gameplay also includes environmental puzzles, resource management, equipment upgrades, and choices during rescue scenarios.[2][6] Between missions, players return to a hub area where they can improve equipment, manage supplies, interact with survivors, and tend to rescued plants and animals.[1][8]
Development and release
Into the Fire is being developed by Starward Industries, the Polish studio behind the 2023 video game The Invincible.[1][9] The developers researched real-world volcanoes and drew inspiration from the 2022 documentary film Fire of Love and documentary films by Werner Herzog.[7]
The game was first announced under the title Dante's Ring. In March 2025, Starward Industries renamed the project Into the Fire, with the studio saying that the new title better reflected the game's focus on entering a dangerous volcanic environment to rescue survivors.[5] An extended gameplay trailer was released in April 2025.[6] The trailer showed firefighting tools, rescue objectives, environmental hazards, puzzles, and choices made during rescue missions.[2]
In November 2025, Starward Industries announced that the game was planned to launch in early access in 2026, with a playtest planned before release.[3][4] In June 2026, Into the Fire was shown during the Day of the Devs presentation at Summer Game Fest.[10] Coverage of the presentation described the game as involving survivor rescues in a fire-ravaged world and noted that the development team had conducted fire-safety research and training for the project.[10] Public playtests were also planned before the game's early access release.[9]
