Intrapsychic trauma

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Etymology

From intra- +‎ psychic + trauma

Definition

Trauma within the psyche or mind.

Describes traumas where the inner self is damaged. As a result of the trauma, an intrapsychic conflict is created with the conflicts between your emotions and your thoughts.[1]

As a link between psychosis and torture

The theoretical link that connects psychosis and torture is the concept of intrapsychic traumas.

One particular aspect, common in the intrapsychic constellation after psychotic breakdown and torture is that we deal with ongoing rupture of "basic trust" and regression to the "psychotic core" in the personality.

To be caught in a real relation with the persecutor in the torture situation, or to get stuck in an inner relation with the persecutory, bad mother, has similar intrapsychic consequences."[2]

Causes

"forms of intrapsychic trauma characterized by intent to harm, such as bullying and adult maltreatment, show a strong overall risk for psychosis, even more so than the death of a parent."[3]

Torturing or terrorizing stimuli are the main causes of intrapsychic traumas, which can lead to psychosis. (dose-response effect)
