Irate (also known as Irate NYC) was an American heavy metal band from Bronx, New York, formed in 1995. The band has prominent roots both musically and culturally in the New York Hardcore scene as well as heavy metal. The band released a total of two albums, one EP and three demos, all independently distributed by the band themselves, within a ten-year span. Though Irate officially disbanded in 2006, demand for a reunion remains high. However, the band has not shared any plans to reform.

History[edit]

The band was formed in 1995 in Bronx, New York by Drummer U.V. and Guitarist Nick Ruiz. Members NandoRedrum (guitar), Phil Vibez (vocals) and Jayson (bass) would join soon after. They were drawn to each other for two reasons: a love of heavy music and the disillusionment created by urban adolescence. Their music exemplified through sound and lyrics, the harsh realities of growing up in a city (as well as a world) of apathy and indifference, a place where you must scream to be heard.[1]

Irate's first two releases, the EP Burden of a Crumbling Society and the full-length 11:34, quickly solidified them as a powerful metal act. The first chance for the band to prove their ability in a live setting came at Castle Heights in Queens, NY. The shows at this venue established a loyal fan base and garnered the attention of other promoters and bands on the scene. As a result, Irate has also played the stages of CBGB's, The Limelight, and L'Amour. The band has had the pleasure of supporting national acts such as Deicide, Overkill, Napalm Death, Death Angel, Hatebreed, Candiria and Nuclear Assault. [1]

In late 2001, Irate embarked on their first overseas tour, headlining shows in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya in Japan. A year later the band found themselves on the road again, this time on a five-country tour of Europe with stops in Belgium, Holland, England, France, and Germany. [1]

The band officially disbanded in 2006.

Since their break up, members of the band, particularly vocalist Phil Vibez and NandoRedrum have continued to make music in other bands such as The Judas Syndrome and Knights of the Black, the latter of which both Vibez and Nando are current members alongside Phil's son Jay Vibez.[2]

Musical style[edit]

Irate has been described as Metalcore, Beatdown hardcore, Groove Metal, and Crossover Thrash.[3]

Name Dispute[edit]

In 2001, the band was approached by another band from California who had also chosen to use the name Irate (stylized as I.R.A.T.E., an abbreviation of "Infinite Rebellion Against The Establishment"). They had filed for a trademark on the name (which Irate NYC had not done), and were asked to stop using it.

In response, Irate's attorney filed a cease and desist motion against Infinite Rebellion Against The Establishment, claiming their documented use of the name dated back to 1996. I.R.A.T.E. responded with documentation of a demo from 1995 that was also under the name Irate, as well as filing a copyright claim to have their myspace page shut down.

In 2003, Irate NYC released the song Vendetta in response to the name dispute. It has since been considered by fans as a symbol of dominance.

Unable to afford to take the case to court in the state of California, the band reluctantly agreed to use the name Irate NYC.

Eventually, this and many other factors led Irate NYC to disband. When asked about this decision, guitarist Nando Redrum said in a 2006 interview:

We all collectively realized that as long as our music was always the main focus, it really didn't matter what banner we went under. While some may view this as giving up, we view it as getting a much-needed fresh start. We are excited at the notion that we no longer have to deal with the burdens that come with the name Irate. Earlier this year we made the announcement that we would not continue on as Irate. [4]
