Irish slave trade

The first recorded history of the Irish slave trade can be found in 1625 when the English king declared that Irish political prisoners were to be sold to settlers in America; at least 30,000 were victims of this. By the mid-1600s, Ireland became the main source of slaves for English merchants, and the slave population of the New world reflected this; it was mostly people of European origins. From 1641 to 1652, an additional 300,000 were sold as slaves. Because of the helplessness of many Irish women and children after these developments, additionally 100,000 were auctioned off to the New world.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
The Irish slaves did not enjoy better lives than other slaves, often worse, because they were of the Catholic faith, which was hated in the times of the religious war.[6]
Interbreeding of Irish females and African males
African slaves were expensive at this time, but the Irish were cheap. This led certain slave traders to interbreed these females and African males to sell them for a higher price. This became such a widespread practice of the slave traders that in 1681 laws were passed to forbid it.
