Isaac Butterfield (born 1993) is an Australian comedian.[1] His performances have included jokes about Jewish people murdered during the Nazi holocaust[2][3][4] and victims of the Christchurch mosque shootings.[5][6][7]

Butterfield's YouTube videos often relate to Australian culture, veganism, cyclists and fourth-wave feminism.[8][not in citation given]

Career[edit]

Butterfield began performing stand-up in 2016[citation needed] and began posting videos on YouTube in the same year.[citation needed]

At the Melbourne Comedy Festival in April 2019, he made a joke about Jewish people killed by Nazis in extermination camps, and replied to an email of complaint from an audience member with "If you can't stand the heat get out of the oven".[2] This response resulted in Netflix cancelling a publishing deal.[3] The Australian Anti-Defamation Commission released a statement saying "It's never OK to spew such hate rhetoric, and Isaac Butterfield should be ashamed for his hideous remarks that crossed all lines, and which trampled on the memory of the dead."[4]

In 2020, Anti Hero was released, containing jokes about the Christchurch mosque shootings.[9] Butterfield responded to the controversy, saying, "It is a joke. It is not real; it is make believe. I don't really feel like that, but that is what comedy is, it is people going on a stage and telling people jokes."[10]

In 2021, Butterfield toured Australia and New Zealand with his show Outlaw.[11]
