Isimi Lagos is a planned city of Lagos State, Nigeria, being constructed in Epe Town. The new city is expected to house up to 10,000 residents upon completion in 2030.[1][2][3] The city covers a land area of over 300 hectares (3,000,000m²) and is designed to promote sustainable living in a coexistence with nature.[1][4]
Isimi Lagos is the first of LandWey's 'Future Cities' under the Newtown project to begin development.[4]
The city's name, 'Isimi,' which means 'Peace of Mind' in Yoruba.[4][5]
Overview[edit]
The city is designed in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13) of Climate Action, with consideration for the natural geography and fixtures of the area.[4][6]
Isimi Lagos plans to house a 'Tech Valley' as part of its development.[4][5] It will also be home to one of MIT's Senseable City Labs, as a result of a partnership with Lagos State Government and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[7][8]
Clusters[edit]
Isimi Lagos will contain residential areas, work areas and recreational areas. The living areas are known as known as clusters.[1][6] The planned clusters are as follows:
- The Origin I
- The Village
- Grey Town
- The Emergence
- Green Life Colony
Timeline[edit]
Earthworks for the project began in mid-2021 after it was announced earlier in the year.[6][9] Construction began in early 2022.[3]
On April 12, 2022, LandWey unveiled the timeline for the project at a symposium held at the company's headquarters in Lagos.[1][3] Later that year, plans were announced to launch a Tech Valley as part of its efforts to create a two-fold ecosystem that provides both residential and educational facilities for tech start-ups and enthusiasts.[2] The Lagos State Government, in partnership with LandWey and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, commissioned the construction of the Senseable Lagos Lab in December 2022, in the Isimi Lagos Tech Valley, during the Lagos Future City Week.[7][8]
In April 2023, construction of the Isimi Lagos Welcome Centre was completed.
