The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Bangladesh Province is a branch of the militant Islamist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, active in Bangladesh, ISIL referred to their operatives and supporters in Bangladesh as Bangladesh Province.[citation needed] The group's formation is unknown but their first attack started on 15 March 2016, where they murdered a Shiite preacher in Bangladesh.
ISIL claims and attacks[edit]
On 15 March 2016, ISIL claimed responsibility for murdering a Shiite a preacher in Bangladesh.[1]
On 22 March 2016, unidentified attackers hacked a Christian convert to death in Northern Bangladesh, amid growing attacks on religious minorities.[2] A day after, ISIL claimed responsibility for the attack.[3]
On 23 April 2016, a university professor was hacked to death on his way to work in Northern Bangladesh. ISIL claimed responsibility for the attack.
On 30 April 2016, a Hindu trailer was hacked to death in his store. ISIL claimed responsibility.[4] On the next day, Bangladesh authorities arrested 3 ISIL suspects for the murder.[5]
On 21 May 2016, a homeopathic doctor was hacked to death in Bangladesh. ISIL claimed responsibility for the attack.[6]
On 25 May 2016, an elderly Hindu trader was stabbed to death, in another series of killings, claimed by ISIL.[7] And ISIL stated that "the assassinations came in retaliation for the Muslims who are being killed and slaughtered in India and the assassinations will continue".
On 5 June 2016, a 65-year old Christian was murdered by ISIL militants.[8]
On 1 July 2016, a Buddhist party leader was assassinated in the area of Banderban Southeast of Bangladesh. ISIL claimed responsibility.
Later on a Hindu was stabbed to death in the area of Madubor in Jahinayadah in Southwest of Bangladesh. ISIL claimed responsibility for the attack.
On the same day more than 22 foreign tourists and 2 police officers were killed and more than 50 were injured in the capital city of Dhaka in Bangladesh in the Artisan restaurant at the Diplomatic zone after a suicide bomber has blown himself up and 4 ISIL militants held hostages and made sure of the hostages identities and released the Muslim hostages while they killed the rest. ISIL claimed responsibility for the event.
