Isle of Man Film Festival
In 2012, Dave Armstrong and Christy DeHaven of DAM Productions founded the current Isle of Man Film Festival format. Initially run alongside their film training scheme MannIN Shorts, it started as a means of giving a platform to local filmmakers but has since grown in to a 5 day international film festival event with Mark Kermode as patron. The Isle of Man Government's Arts Council had held a one off event in 2006 also titled 'Isle of Man Film Festival', focusing mainly on the Young Filmmaker of Mann competition and outdoor cinema held at The Nunnery, Douglas.
2012 Isle of Man Film Festival[edit]
Run in conjunction with the MannIN Shorts Film Training Scheme and produced by Dave Armstrong and Christy DeHaven, the 3 day festival was a combination of screenings and filmmaker workshops in acting and screenwriting.
The festival opened with the Isle of Man Film Screening of ‘The Heart of Me’ followed by a Q&A with Producer Martin Pope and writer Lucinda Coxon. Saturday evening event 'An Evening with the Independents' with guest speakers Phil Hawkins, Danny Lacey, Raff Degruttola and Lee Boardman.
Finishing with the screening event 'Big Ideas, Mini Movies' in the Broadway Cinema, screening Manx Made films 'Solace in Wicca', 'I Do' and 'Hide and Seek', the Young Filmmaker of Mann competition and the Scene Stealer competition
2013 Isle of Man Film Festival[edit]
The 2013 programme of events was:
11 September: Preview screening of the debut feature by Manx-born independent film maker Andrew Blackburn.
12 September: Future Shorts Fringe Night. A reel of award-winning short films from across the globe, created by Future Shorts, founded by Manxman Fabien Riggall who has since gone on to create the 'Secret Cinema'. The reel was screened at three boutique cinemas across the Island, all on the same night.
13 September: The Disappearance of Alice Creed at Broadway Cinema. Thriller starring Gemma Arterton and Eddie Marsan, shot on the Island in 2009. Introduced by film critic Mark Kermode, including a Q&A session with writer/director J Blakeson.
14 and 15 September: The Guerilla Filmmakers Masterclass: Guerilla Films' Chris Jones hosted a filmmakers' workshop.
14 September: Isle of Man Arts Council's Young Filmmaker of Mann. Afternoon session, Broadway Cinema.
14 September: MannIN Shorts Presents... Homegrown Mini Movies! Screenings and prize presentation of winning films from the open Festival Competition. Exclusive first screenings of short films made within the Isle of Man training scheme over the past year; including 'Closet', 'Solace in Wicca' and 'Barry Brown'. 2013 saw the introduction of two new categories under the themes of "Island Life" and "Music Moves". The 'Best of the Fest' film, as chosen by the festival judges headed by Mark Kermode, was also shown.
15 September: Life in the Film Industry. Actor, producer and chairman of Distrify Wilkinson and Guerilla Films co-founder and London Screenwriters Festival Director Chris Jones, talked about their lives in the industry with Leeds-based filmmaker and former Radio Aire presenter Danny Lacey.
2014 Isle of Man Film Festival[edit]

10 September: Exclusive first look at Davy Knowles’ documentary “Island Bound” in the Gaiety Theatre, with onstage Q&A after between Davy Knowles and Christy DeHaven
11 September: Future Shorts Film Night at various venues around the Island (Patchwork Cafe in Port St Mary, Bath and Bottle ‘Speakeasy Cinema’ in Douglas and Mother T’s Community Centre in Laxey)
12 September: Isle of Man Film Special Q&A Screening of “Belle” with Amma Asante and Mark Kermode in attendance at the Broadway Cinema Douglas
13 September: Mark Kermode and The Dodge Brothers Silent Cinema at the Gaiety Theatre
14 September: International Short Film Competition Screening followed by Red Carpet Awards Ceremony at the Broadway Cinema hosted by Christy DeHaven and with Mark Kermode presenting the awards, including the Best of the Festival. Premieres of the MannIN Shorts productions filmed this year (“Muck”, “Breathless” and “Battle of Ronaldsway”)

25 August (IOMFF15 Interim Event) : Way Out West - short film screenings at Elizabeth Main’s Pilates Studio
8 September: Roger Dean – 'When Fantasy Becomes Film' at Noa Bakehouse, Q&A with the artist
9 September: 'The Goonies' outdoor cinema screening at the Douglas Amphitheatre, with silent disco headsets
10 September: Future Shorts film screening and discussion in Laxey, Port St Mary and Douglas
11 September : Pitch Fest: shortlisted entrants given the chance to pitch their projects to film-industry professionals, to try and win funding
11 September: 'Take Down' preview screening and Q&A with Director Jim Gillespie at the Broadway Cinema
12 September: 'Take Down' Adventure Day - visiting filmmakers taken coasteering around the Island with Adventurous Experiences
12 September evening: Mark Kermode in conversation with SIR JOHN HURT CBE at the Gaiety Theatre
13 September: International Short Film Competition Screening at the Broadway Cinema
13 September: Red Carpet Awards hosted by Mark Kermode at the Broadway Cinema.
