[4] In 1989, she co-founded the Civic Society of Los Derechos Humanos del Meta (CCDHM), a forum for human rights organizations, popular leaders, doctors, and unions to offer legal advice and support in reporting violent violations and human rights abuses.

Per Anger Prize[edit]

In 2015 Islena Rey Rozríguez was awarded the Per Anger prize for her continuous work for human rights in Colombia in spite of her and her associates being subjected to multiple attacks, the most notable attack being October 17th, 2009.

“I was traveling along the River Huejar, in a city called Puerto Rico in Meta. And I arrived in a village called Puerto Toledo. The local farmers there had invited me in as a witness. They were falsely accused of being guerrilla soldiers and drug dealers. They were innocent farmers, but they were drawn into the armed conflict.” [5]

— Islena Rey Rodríguez

Traveling by boat, a river defense association boat, on the River Huejar, together with her associates from CCDHM, on the way back from Puerto Toledo, a man disguised as a civilian was waving a white handkerchief. Islena believed that the man was in need of help. She decided to go closer to see what was going on. When they were about five meters from the man he pulled out a gun and opened fire on Islena and her associates. Islena was hit by two bullets that damaged her ribs, stomach, and one of her lungs. The other bullet hit her in the back and incapacitated her whole left arm. It almost killed her. After spending 2 weeks in the hospital her life was saved and she is still able to continue her work as a human rights activist today.
