Ismail Ata Mausoleum
The mausoleum of Ismail-Ata is located in the Kazygurt district of Turkestan region in the center of the village of Turbat, in the north of the old Muslim cemetery in a complex with other buildings of the ensemble. The mausoleum was erected over the grave of the mystic and Muslim preacher of the 11th century, Ismail Ata. According to legend, when the young man Ismail was 20 years old, there was an invasion of Kalmyks who killed his parents and brother. Ismail was captured and taken into slavery, where he grazed livestock. There he discovered unusual abilities. The miracles that he demonstrated forced captors to convert to Islam and set him free. However, he did not immediately return to his homeland, but went to the Sufi sheikh Said Ata, from whom he received a blessing and an order to head the Sufi community. In the homeland, Ismail-ata continued his activity as a preacher among nomads and farmers. The mausoleum was erected in the 14th century by order of Timur. Since 1976, the complex has been taken under state protection as a historical and architectural monument; however, no works were carried out and the structure was gradually being destroyed. The people of the village of Turbat decided to revive the ancient monument and took an active part in its restoration.
