"It Sure Was Good" is a duet by George Jones and Tammy Wynette. It was written by Billy Sherrill and George Richey.
Background[edit]
"It Sure Was Good" was recorded specifically for the Jones' duet project My Very Special Guests, an album the wayward singer would struggle to complete between 1977 and 1979. Jones, who was drunk or missing most of the time, overdubbed his vocal parts. "We spent an incredible amount of time in the studio," producer Billy Sherrill remembered in the 1990 Jones documentary Same Ole Me. "On some of those songs, one verse would be a year away from the chorus...His voice wouldn't be up to it." Jones and Wynette, who had divorced in 1975, were more popular than ever as a duo, scoring two #1 hits "Golden Ring" and "Near You," in 1976 and making the Top 5 again with "Southern California" in 1977.
Recording and composition[edit]
"It Sure Was good" was composed by Billy Sherrill and George Richey, whom Wynette married in 1978. It was recorded on February 22, 1977. The song exploits the expectations of the country audience at the time, many of whom wondered if George and Tammy might someday get back together:
- We don't know what it was but we had it
- We don't know where it went but we lost it
- And it may never come back again but I sure wish it would
- We don't know what it was but it sure was good
The song was eventually released as the B-side two the pair's 1980 hit "Two Story House." By then, George and Tammy's relationship had deteriorated further, mainly because of the publication of Wynette's autobiography Stand By Your Man, which painted an ugly picture of Jones. Remarkably, the two singers would record another LP of duets in 1980.
