The Italian Data Protection Authority (IDPA), officially known as the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali (Garante della Privacy), is an independent authority established in Italy in 1997 to ensure the protection of personal data and privacy rights.[2] The IDPA is based in Rome, Italy, and its activities are carried out in accordance with national laws, European Union regulations, and international agreements, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The authority has played a significant role in shaping data protection regulations and enforcing compliance both within Italy and across the European Union.[3]
History
The Italian Data Protection Authority was established by the Italian Parliament in 1997. The establishment of the IDPA aimed to create a central body responsible for the protection of personal data and privacy rights in Italy. Over the years, the IDPA has handled various high-profile cases, ensuring the protection of privacy rights for Italian citizens.[4]
In late March 2023, the Italian data protection authority (composed of Pasquale Stanzione, Ginevra Cerrina Feroni, Agostino Ghiglia, Guido Scorza) banned ChatGPT in Italy and opened an investigation asserting that ChatGPT was exposing minors to age-inappropriate content, and that OpenAI's use of ChatGPT conversations as training data could be a violation of Europe's GDPR.[5][6]
