Itay Zalait (Hebrew: איתי זלאיט; born 1979) is an Israeli sculptor and painter. In 2016 he created the "King Bibi" statue, a golden Benjamin Netanyahu. The guerilla artwork drew an official protest and was knocked down by an angry viewer.[1]
Zalait placed the four 4.5 meter (15 foot) tall effigy of Netanyahu on a white pedestal in Tel Aviv's Rabin Square (formerly Kings of Israel Square) adjacent to city hall.[2] He described it as a test of the limits of freedom of expression in Israel as the Israeli government and artists have been engaged in a "culture war" over measures by Culture Minister Miri Regev to withhold state funds from institutions that do not express loyalty to the state.[3] He said he wanted to open a debate around Israeli attitudes to Prime Minister Netanyahu.[4]
Tel Aviv municipal officials said they respected its residents' freedom of expression but ordered that the statue be removed by 1 p.m. because it was placed without a permit and said they would haul it away and fine him if he refused.[5][6][7]
