Ivan Stepanovich Maleshoff[nb 2] (1895–1935), known as the Bluebeard of Kharkiv, was a Soviet-Ukrainian serial killer. After murdering his final victim, a former detective noticed him rubbing his snowshoes to remove blood from them, which led to his arrest. Maleshoff was convicted of murdering 20 women over the span of 12 months between 1934 and 1935. However, since murder is not typically a capital offense in Russia, Maleshoff was instead sentenced to death for anti-social banditry. In 1935, Maleshoff was executed in 1935 by firing squad at the age of 40.[3] Prior to his execution, he confessed and plead guilty to 30 additional murders nearby in Kyiv during 1934.[4]

Biography[edit]

Personal life[edit]

Maleshoff, an electrical engineer, was happily married and well respected in his community.[5]

Murders and capture[edit]

Over the span of 12 months between 1934 and 1935, Maleshoff murdered 20 young women in Kharkiv. Little evidence was found at the crime scenes, and Maleshoff was never a suspect until his final murder.[5] Shortly after the body of his last victim was found, a former detective noticed Maleshoff cleaning blood from his snowshoes.[4] He was later apprehended while cleaning bloodstains from his clothing at a hotel room in Kharkiv. There, he voluntarily admitted to his crimes.[5]

Convictions and execution[edit]

Maleshoff argued that his murders resulted from a "mental twist," but the court ruled that this did not qualify him for insanity, and he was convicted of the 20 murders. However, since murder is not typically a capital offense in Russia, Maleshoff was instead sentenced to death for anti-social banditry. On June 7, 1935, Maleshoff was executed in 1935 by firing squad at the age of 40.[6] Prior to his execution, he confessed and plead guilty to 30 additional murders in Kyiv during 1934.[4]
