Ivory (stylized IVORY )is the debut studio album by American singer and songwriter Omar Apollo, released on April 8, 2022 through Warner Records. The album is an eclectic mix of funk, psychedelic R&B and songs that reference his Mexican heritage.[1] It is his second project with the label, preceded by Apolonio.
Background and recording
On April 12, 2021, Omar Apollo tweeted out to fans that he and Pharrell Williams recorded a set of songs.[2] They later collaborated with Chad Hugo to record more tracks, with one of them making the final tracklist.[3]
On June 13, 2021 Omar Apollo unveiled the first single for his upcoming project would be "Go Away".[4] With the release the lead single, Apollo announced the Desvelado Tour scheduled to start in late summer in support of the album.[5] These dates would later be rescheduled.
This was followed up with the second single “Bad Life” featuring Kali Uchis in November of that year. By this time, the first version of the album was finished and handed in before Apollo decided to scrap it due to creative reasons.[6]
On February 9, 2022, Apollo released the third single ‘’Invincible’’ featuring Daniel Caesar. He also announced that his debut album would be titled IVORY and the release date for it.[7]
While leading up to the album's release Omar shared two additional singles, "Killing Me" released March 11, 2022[8]. On March 23, 2022 he released The Neptunes produced track "Tamagotchi".[9]
Music and lyrics
Apollo was influenced by timeless bodies of work, such as Minnie Ripperton's Perfect Angel, Whitney Houston, Nirvana's Nevermind, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West, and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.[10]
Promotion and release
On September 14, 2021 he announced the tour would be rescheduled to continue working on his album.[11] Apollo shared the rescheduled tour dates in January 2022.[12] He was also announced to perform at Coachella in April 2022[13] and promoted his set with a billboard reading "Heterosexuality Can Be Cured".[14] Apollo was announced as the featured artist by Apple Music Up Next for the month of April to coincide with the release of IVORY.
Singles
The album's lead single “Go Away” was released on July 8, 2021. The song was praised for themes of unrequited love and running out of time with someone. Additionally, Apollo's falsetto and the slick groove of the synth-pop production were commended[15][16] The single was promoted with a performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[17]
“Bad Life" featuring Kali Uchis was released on November 3, 2021 as the album's second single. The song is about putting energy into a relationship while the other person does not do the same, and being resentful; Apollo wishes a bad life on them with whoever they date afterward.[18]. An accompanying music video was released on November 5 directed by Alfred Marroquín and Apollo[19]
The third single “Invincible” featuring Daniel Caesar was released on February 9, 2022 along with the music video for it. The song grapples with mortality and the impact people leave on each other. Its accompanying music video features masks designed by visual artist Andrés Gudiño.[20]
“Killing Me” was released on March 11, 2022 as the fourth single. The bilingual R&B track has Apollo getting deep and fantasizing about a love that he cannot seem to get off his mind to the point where it is killing him. The song was praised for its sensual and silky production as well as Apollo’s seamless switch from English to Spanish in the second verse. He promoted this song with a performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[21][22]
“Tamagotchi” was released as the fifth single on March 23, 2022. The song was produced by The Neptunes, which can be heard with Williams’ trademark four-count start. The bass-heavy track has Apollo rap-singing in Spanish and English over a late 2010’s R&B flow and plucked Samba cadence. The song was praised for its bilingual and flirty lyrics, catchy chorus, and classic Neptunes-style bounce.[23][24][25] The music video for the track later was released on April 8, 2022, along with the album release.
