Marguerite Clark who performs as iyah may (stylised all in lowercase) and formerly as Mayah, is a singer-songwriter from Brisbane, Australia. She is also a medical doctor.
Early life and career[edit]
Iyah may was born in Cairns, Queensland and later moved to Brisbane. She describes her musical influences as Lauryn Hill, TLC, Massive Attack and Moby.[1] While studying for a medical degree in 2015, iyah may moved to New York City on her student loan where she took classes with vocal coach, Craig Derry and worked in the local jazz and blues scene.[2][3] After returning to Australia and completing her degree at James Cook University, Mackay in 2016, she continued her music career as Mae Brooks, an R&B and pop singer.[3] Under that name she wrote "Real You" and "Stop Playin'".[4] She return to a medical role in 2020 and worked as a hospital intern in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia.[5]
The singer-songwriter also performed as Mayah.[6] She entered the United Kingdom Songwriting Contest in 2017, winning the Pop category with "Something Sweet" and the R&B category with "XO Girl".[6] Contest judge Mark Cawley explained, "'Something Sweet' had a freshness about it, both in the lyric and concept. Some great word play and a fun vibe."[6] "XO Girl" also won second place in the R&B/Hip Hop category at the United States-based Unsigned Only music competition in 2018.[7] As Mayah, she released a single, "Endless Mistakes", in May 2019.[8] She followed with "Butterflies (the Rush Inside)" featuring Peter Koppes (March 2020).[9] Another single, "Making Spaces" also featured Koppes (ex-the Church), and appeared in February 2021.[10]
She released her first single as iyah may, "Pray", in November 2019 via Island Records Australia.[11] Her second single under that name, "Tied You Up", appeared in the following month.[12] In April 2021 national youth radio station, Triple J premiered her single, "XO Girl" (featuring Saint Lane).[13] "XO Girl" had been reworked as a pop song with Harry Lane and Stuart Stuart as co-composers.[14] Its music video was directed by Kevin Bar and filmed in Brisbane.[15]
