J.P. Nestor (1876–1967) was an American banjo player, singer, and leader of a string band in rural Virginia. He recorded four sides at the Bristol Sessions (the same 1927 session where the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers debuted). Though he was invited to New York for additional recording, Nestor refused to journey that far and he never recorded again.[1]
His song "Train on the Island" became a regional favorite, and the track was included on Harry Smith's 1952 album Anthology of American Folk Music.
Nestor died in 1967, at the age of 91.
