Pheto Mabena (born March 1, 1990), known professionally by his stage name J.Smallz, is a South African audio engineer, record producer, and vocalist known for having worked with musical acts like Kid Tini,[1] Khuli Chana, Ayanda Jiya, S'Villa,[2] Lolli Native,[3] and more.

Career[edit]

2005-2007: Early Life[edit]

The youngest of three siblings, Pheto grew up playing musical instruments like the piano, drums, guitar, and marimba. He joined the Mpumalanga Kosmos children's choir at age 13 and toured with them across South Africa performing English and Afrikaans choral songs.

He later got an opportunity with his school St. Thomas Aquinas Witbank and Radio Kragbron (a former local radio station in Witbank, Mpumalanga) to record his first album alongside his fellow marimba teammates, performing often in Johannesburg and Pretoria at opening ceremonies of events, and most prestigiously for President Thabo Mbheki at Witbank Civic Theatre.

2008-2019: Career Beginnings and TinismDotc0m[edit]

In his adult life, Pheto (now assuming the stage name J.Smallz) moved to Pretoria and there his interests grew within the field of audio engineer, working with several up and coming artists (mostly within a musical conglomerate called Only The Illest, abbreviated to OTI) in Gauteng eventually joining TinismDotc0m[4] in 2011, an independent South African record label owned by Miso Tini.

The record label was home to the following musical acts; Ginger Breadman (also known as Ginger Trill[5]), Ayanda Jiya,[6] FlexBoogie, Kid Tini,[7][8] Slogan, and Namhla Mbawuli.[9] He later began his own music career in 2017 releasing his debut R&B EP, Songs About Women.[10]

2020-present: Ambitiouz Entertainment[edit]

He later joined Ambitiouz Entertainment as an in-house audio engineer.[11] J.Smallz then got nominated in SAMA27 alongside Tweezy, Kitie, Trayce, and Neil T for Best engineered Album of the Year, The Second Coming by Ambitiouz Entertainment artist Kid Tini.[12]
