Hema Vallabh, is a South African social advocate for gender equality. Hema is chemical engineer, social entrepreneur and global leader. She is the co-founder of Women in Engineering (WomEng), a global social enterprise that aims to attract, develop and retain the pipeline of women in engineering.[1]

Background and Education[edit]

She was born in South Africa in 1983. She attended the University of Cape Town (UCT), graduating in with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree with Honours in Chemical Engineering. She continued her studies at UCT, graduating with a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Chemical Engineering, specialising in Catalysis, in 2008. She graduated with a diploma in Ontological Coaching from the Newfield Network in 2013. She will commence with her Executive MBA at University of Oxford, Saïd Business School in September 2018.[1]

Achievements[edit]

In October 2017, Hema Vallabh was awarded the Global Women Leader's award at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington, D.C.[2] Hema was named as a Tutu Fellow after graduating from the Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellowship, a multifaceted learning experience and run in partnership between the African Leadership Institute (AFLI) and University of Oxford, in September 2017.[3] She is a TEDx speaker for a talk titled "Are women set to be the engineers of the future?" presented in Johannesburg in December 2015.[4] She was listed in the Mail & Guardian newspaper’s 2011 list of 200 top young South Africans.[5]

She serves as Chair of the WomEng and WomHub boards since 2015. She serves as an Advisory Board Member for the African Leadership Academy Student Enterprise Program since 2017.[1] She is a member of the African Leadership Network and the Vital Voices Global Leadership Network.[1]
