Jessica Rose Hancock[1], known professionally as 'JJ ROSA' (stylized as JJ ROSA), is a British singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and music producer born in Stockport (South Manchester), England.

JJ is recognised amongst her peers not only as a multi-skilled musician and powerhouse vocalist but as an exceptionally gifted electric guitarist[2] and is known for being an international ambassador for music giants Yamaha[3][4] and previously sponsored by Fender.[5]

In addition to her own musical repertoire, JJ has also written and produced tracks for and/or with other artists including LA rapper Lexy P[6] and artists such as Amber Prothero, Ray BLK, iShi, Laura White and more.

Under her alias JJUICY[7] JJ is concentrating a lot of efforts on her love of collaborating, writing and producing within and across many musical styles and genres, creating soundtracks and music for film and TV series too.

Career[edit]

At the young age of 19 JJ (at this time known as Jessie Rose) signed her first worldwide major record deal with S-Curve Records in New York, US. Shortly in to the deal the label licensed JJ to Warner Bros Music Group in the UK.

JJ released her debut Live at The Deaf Institute EP, where she and her band (at this time known as The Jessie Rose Trip) performed back home in Manchester at iconic venue The Deaf Institute.

In 2017, due to creative differences and JJ feeling 'extremely confined', JJ parted ways with her record label S-Curve Records[8] in New York and henceforth became an independent artist, "signed" under her own label JJUICY Music and music production and writing alias JJUICY

In July 2019, she released her debut single Everything and Nothing, followed soon after by Pandora in November 2019. Both releases JJ co-wrote with acclaimed producer Troy Miller (known for his early work as a session drummer for Amy Winehouse, as well as more recently writing with and producing for Rag n Bone Man, Diana Ross, Emeli Sande, Laura Mvula) and songwriter Fiona Bevan.

In 2021 JJ released entirely self-produced track Rockstar featuring LA rapper Lexy P co-written with songwriter Christopher "Cricky" Markey and Catherine "Cat" Cassidy of ex Sweet Female Attitude[9]. Released under JJUICY Music, and distributed via Sony Music, The Orchard and IMA Music Group USA.

in 2023 JJ is ready to release her most extensive self produced body of work yet with her 'official' (post label signing) EP to date with leading single Praying at the helm and collaborations with rising legends London Community Gospel Choir and more to be announced.

Early life[edit]

JJ was born in Stockport, South Manchester, to English professional ballerina mother (also northern born) and scientist father, originally from London.

As a child, she attended and sang songs in the choir at her local theatre school North Cheshire Theatre School, owned by her mother. The School was infamous for producing a multitude of exceptional talent such as acclaimed songwriter Jin Jin (born Janee Bennett) as well as actress and screenwriter Sally Lindsay, the late Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding as well as Sweet Female Attitude's Catherine 'Cat' Cassidy.

JJ began playing classical piano at the age of 7, where she also wrote her very first song "Family" and discovered this soon to be love for song-writing. Later JJ achieved a distinction Grade 8 in piano at 14.

Shortly after she grew a love for electric guitar where her she began playing to an advanced level within the first year of learning. Mainly self taught, JJ mainly learnt a lot via ear, mimicking the playing styles of Jimi Hendrix and a bit later Prince and Lenny Kravitz.

JJ attended music school City College Manchester where she studied both music performance, theory and studio engineering for 2 years, achieving the highest mark in her year.

JJ spent most of her teenage years learning how to professionally write songs as well as advancing her keen ear for music production, in studio sessions most weeks working with many respected and successful producers and writers such as Troy Miller (known for his early work as a session drummer for Amy Winehouse, as well as more recently writing with and producing for Rag'n'Bone Man, Diana Ross, Emeli Sandé, Laura Mvula), Steve Booker, and Billen Ted.

When JJ was signed with her US record label S-Curve she lived partly between NYC and home. Eventually home became London.

Performances[edit]

Artistry[edit]

JJ grew up listening to R&B, Motown with favourites such as Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, and Stevie Wonder. Her early teens led to the discovery of Rock bands like The Offspring and Limp Bizkit.

Her ultimate musical icons are Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Whitney Houston, Eminem, Dr. Dre and Lauryn Hill. Jazz artists such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Nina Simone have also inspired her from a young age.

JJ is also a huge admirer of artist and producer Labrinth and has prospects of working and collaborating with him in the near future.

Personal life[edit]

JJ was born in to a Catholic family and attended Catholic school but doesn't class herself as religious but has adopted the ideology of treating people the way you would want to be treated yourself and very much believes in the notion of Karma.

In an interview for Mind Charity as well as previously Lock magazine[14], JJ revealed that she had dealt with struggles with an eating disorder when she was younger as well as being diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder where up until more recently she would have crippling panic attacks before and even during performances. JJ is now in control of her panic attacks and is a huge advocate of mental health associations and therapists who specialise in this field.

In a separate interview, JJ revealed she had been sexually assaulted by a music industry executive in 2021. Investigation was carried out but no charges were carried out although the mental health implications during and post the incident have left lasting damage.
