Jaun-Pierre "JP" Buys[2] (born April 30, 1996) is a South African mixed martial artist who competes in the Flyweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Background[edit]
Starting out his wrestling career in 2011 to become a better Rugby fighter, he wrestled throughout highschool and dropped out at 17, winning various national wrestling championships, eventually transitioned into MMA.[3][4]

Early career[edit]
Starting his professional career in 2015, Buys went 4-1 fighting for Extreme Fighting Championship, winning the EFC Worldwide Flyweight Championship champion at EFC after submitting Baldwin Mdlalose in the first round at EFC 54.[5][6]
Buys was invited to Dana White's Contender Series 7 on August 22, 2017, where he faced Joby Sanchez. He lost the bout via TKO stoppage in the second round.[7]
Coming off the loss, Buys moved up in weight and challenged Philippe Rouch for the EFC Worldwide Bantamweight Championship at EFC 69, defeating him via guillotine choke in the first round. He would then compete at Brave CF 19 against Gamzat Magomedov, where he won the bout via disqualification in the third round.[8]
Buys defended the EFC Worldwide Bantamweight Championship at EFC Worldwide 78 against Luthando Biko, defeating him in the fourth round via TKO stoppage.[9]
Making an appareance for Legacy Fighting Alliance at LFA 78, Buys faced Cristian Rodriguez, Jr. and defeated him via first round TKO stoppage.[10]
After winning his next 4 bouts since his last chance at a UFC contract, Buys was invited back to Dana White's Contender Series 36, facing Jacob Silva who he chocked unconscious in the first round and got him a contract.[11]
Ultimate Fighting Championship[edit]
Buys faced Bruno Gustavo da Silva on March 20, 2021 at UFC on ESPN 21.[12] After getting knocked down multiple times during the bout, Buys lost the bout via technical knockout in the second round.[13][14]
Buys, as a replacement for Danaa Batgerel, faced Montel Jackson on September 18, 2021 at UFC Fight Night 192.[15] Buys lost the fight by unanimous decision, with Montel setting the record for the most knockdowns in a bout in UFC Bantamweight history with four.[16]
Buys faced Cody Durden on June 25, 2022 at UFC on ESPN 38.[17] He lost the fight by TKO in the first round.[18]
