Jabari Banks (born August 2, 1998)[2] is an American actor and musician best known as the star of the Peacock television series Bel-Air.[3]
Early life and education
Banks was born on August 2, 1998 in Prince George's County, Maryland, right outside of Washington, DC. In high school, he attended Riverdale Baptist School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.[1] Though he had an interest in acting, Banks grew up playing basketball, football, soccer, and rapping. When Banks was forced off the basketball team due to his low grades, he took up theater.[2] Though he was not raised in Philadelphia, Banks does have family there.[1] He actually lived with an uncle in Philadelphia when he was in college.[4] In 2020, he earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts in Musical Theater from the University of the Arts.[2][5] Justin Luján, the program director for acting at Banks' alma mater, described him as a “jack of all trades” because he sings, dances, acts, raps, and plays basketball. Banks worked closely with Luján for the university's talent showcase in Los Angeles where he was discovered by Craig Dorman and a talent agency. Banks and Dorfman met in 2019 when Dorfman was teaching at the university.[1]
Career
In 2020, Banks signed with Frontline Management and The Kohner Agency.[1] On August 31, 2021, it was announced that Banks had been cast as the main protagonist in the drama series, Bel-Air, inspired by Morgan Cooper's short film. Banks would play Will Smith’s character of the same name, the role Smith originated on the iconic NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Smith surprised Banks after his audition on Zoom to tell him he won the role.[5] Bel-Air was Banks’ first television role.[6]
