Jack Jung is a Korean-American writer and translator best known for his translation of Yi Sang: Selected Works (2020), which won the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for literary translation from the Modern Language Association,[1] the first recipient for a book translated from Korean.[2] He was also honored by the Big Other Magazine as the winner of the best translated book for 2021.[3]
Early life and education[edit]
Jung was born in Seoul, South Korea and moved to the United States at age 12 with his mother.[4][5] Because she was a nurse, he grew up across the Midwest and New England[6] and moved nearly every six months.[7] Eventually, he attended Harvard University for college and Seoul National University for a master's degree.[4] He began translating poetry while at Harvard at the suggestion of his professor Jorie Graham,[8] at which point he began reading Yi Sang, a modernist poet who lived during Japanese colonization of Korea and died of tuberculosis at age 27.[1]

Jung is currently a visiting assistant professor of English at Davidson College[6] and has also taught translation at the Literature Translation Institute of Korea.[9] In 2020, Jung's translations were published alongside translations from Korean or Japanese by Joyelle McSweeney, Sawako Nakayasu, and Don Mee Choi, who edited the volume for Wave Books.[10] The book was reviewed as going "further than any previous English translation in providing readers with a sense of the historical context and political stakes of this enigmatic, often baffling writer’s aesthetics" by Guernica,[11] and compared positively to the movie Parasite by Ed Park in The New York Review of Books.[12] It also garnered positive reviews from The Nation,[13] Asymptote,[14] and Harvard Review.[15]
His translations have also been published in Bomb,[16] The Paris Review,[17] Modern Poetry in Translation,[18] and Angel City Review.[19] Jung's own essays and poems have been published in Poetry,[20] Poetry Northwest,[21] Nat. Brut,[22] Asian American Writers' Workshop,[23] Washington Square Review,[24] and Afternoon Visitor.[25]
He serves as a mentor in the American Literary Translation Association's Emerging Translator Mentorship Program.[26]
