Jack is introduced as principal character at the beginning of the second season of the show's six season run. Jack appeared in the show until it's end and was an important character both in the show and also American netword TV history - being one half of the first gay kiss on network television in the second three finale of the show.

Character[edit]

Jack is portrayed as shy, clumsy and arty when he was introduced to the show at the beginning of the second season, but gains confidence as the seasons go on. He comes from a wealthy family that have fallen on troubled times following the death of his older brother, Tim McPhee, and the onset of their mother's mental breakdown. Having moved to Capeside with his mother and sister, abandoned by their father, Jack and Andie have to care for their mother and her deminishing mental health, while Jack also has to find a job to support them.

Though Jack ends up in a relationship with Joey Potter, he ends up coming out as the show's first gay character following the emotional reading of a personal poem that gets Capeside High questioning his sexuality.

Over time, Jack grows in confidence and finds a loving family for himself in Jen Lindley and Grams (Mrs. Ryan). Jack and Jen become bestfiends at the end of season 2 and this friendship lasts until the very end, when Jack ends up raising Jen's daughter following her death in the season six finale.
