Jack Douglas Teixeira (born 2001) is an American airman in the 102nd Intelligence Wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard. In April 2023, Teixeira was charged with violating the Espionage Act after allegedly disclosing hundreds of Pentagon documents on a Discord server, leading to his arrest. He was charged with the "unauthorized retention and transmission" of classified United States government documents.

Background[edit]

Early life[edit]

Teixeira attended Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School in North Dighton, Massachusetts, graduating in 2020

Teixeira was born in 2001,[2] and grew up in Dighton, Massachusetts. Teixeira's stepfather is a retired master sergeant in the United States Air Force.[3] His stepfather and stepbrother worked at Joint Base Cape Cod.[4]

Teixeira is of Portuguese descent; his grandfather immigrated to the United States from São Miguel Island, in the Azores.[5][6] In 2020, Teixeira graduated from Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School, but missed his graduation ceremony due to training obligations at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.[7][8][9]

Thug Shaker Central[edit]

Thug Shaker Central is a chatroom on Discord allegedly linked to the 2023 Pentagon document leaks.[10][11] Chatroom members reportedly played video games together, such as the open-world video game Project Zomboid; according to The New York Times, Teixeira shared in-game weapons with the group members and was identified as the chatroom administrator.[7] According to his Steam profile, Teixeira played games such as Arma 3 (2013), PUBG: Battlegrounds (2017), and the grand strategy wargame Hearts of Iron IV (2016), often playing Call of Duty and Halo with server members.[12]

Military service[edit]

Upon graduating from Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School, Teixeira joined the 102nd Intelligence Wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard as a Cyber Transport Systems journeyman in September 2019.[13] Teixeira was stationed at Otis Air National Guard Base in Cape Cod.[14] In July 2022, Teixeira was promoted to airman first class.[15] As part of his role, Teixeira possessed a Top Secret security clearance.[16]

Publication of leaked material[edit]

Teixeira is alleged to have regularly shared classified information on the online chat service Discord on Thug Shaker Central, parsed from documents he read, according to The Washington Post.[17] According to The New York Times, some chat members struggled to understand the summaries or did not take them seriously.[7] In October 2022, Teixeira is alleged to have posted the first of several sets of classified documents on the server.[7]

Prosecution[edit]

The criminal complaint filed in Teixeira's arrest

On the morning of April 13, 2023, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested Teixeira at his mother's residence in Dighton.[13] The next day, Teixeira made his first appearance at the U.S. District Court in Boston before a U.S. magistrate judge, and the formal charging document was unsealed.[18][19] He was charged with two offenses: (1) violating the Espionage Act by retaining and transmitting national defense information without authorization and (2) unauthorized removal and retention of classified information.[19][18] Attached to the criminal complaint was a supporting affidavit from a special agent of the FBI Counterintelligence Division.[20]

Teixeira has not yet entered a plea.[20] A detention hearing is set for April 19, and the defendant may also enter a plea at that hearing.[20]
