Jacob Coxon
Jacob Coxon is a French-British technology researcher who previously worked at artificial intelligence companies OpenAI and Anthropic.[1][2] In September 2026, Coxon resigned from Anthropic, citing fears that artificial intelligence poses an existential threat to humanity.[3]
Biography
Coxon was born in 1999 and attended the University of Cambridge.[4] At OpenAI he contributed to GPT-4o, before joining Anthropic, where he focused on model pretraining.[4] He lives in San Francisco.
Career
Resignation
On September 8, 2026, Coxon resigned from his position as an AI researcher at Anthropic, criticizing both Anthropic and OpenAI for "gambling with our lives."[5][6] In a statement posted on X, Coxon wrote that "The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger."
Coxon's resignation was widely cited in arguments for regulating artificial intelligence companies,[7][8] and widely covered in popular media.[8][9][10]
