Jacob Eapen

Jacob Eapen is an Indian-American pediatrician and public health physician. He serves as Medical Director of Alameda Health System and as a member of the Board of Directors of Washington Township Healthcare District in Fremont, California.[1][2] He received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2007.[1][3]

Early life and education

Eapen was born in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India.[1][4] He received his MBBS degree from Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram in 1976 and completed postgraduate training in pediatrics at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana.[4][5]

Eapen earned a Master of Public Health degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1985.[1][4] He served on the advisory board of the UC Berkeley School of Public Health.[4]

He completed a pediatric residency at Stanford University School of Medicine from 1992 to 1993.[6] Stanford University included him among 40 alumni profiled in a publication marking the medical school's 40th anniversary in Palo Alto.[4][6][2]

Career

Work in Africa

From 1980 to 1984, Eapen worked in Sub-Saharan Africa at Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and at Sokoto University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria.[1][5] During this period, he provided medical care to approximately 200-250 patients daily.[4][2]

United Nations service

Eapen served as Health Advisor for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) from 1988 to 1989 at the Philippines Refugee Processing Center in Bataan.[1][7] He coordinated medical care for Indo-Chinese refugees at the facility.[7][4]

Public health positions

Eapen was appointed Public Health Commissioner for Alameda County, California in June 1999 for a two-year term.[5][1] He serves as Medical Director of Alameda Health System.[4][8] The system operates mobile health clinics and school-based health programs.[4]

Hospital board service

Eapen was elected to the Board of Directors of Washington Township Healthcare District in November 2004.[4][1] He has been re-elected five times through 2022.[9] He served as Board President in 2024 and as Board Secretary in 2025.[10]
