Jacob Fraden (Яков Владимирович Фрейдин) (April 12, 1945 –) is an American inventor,<ref 1>, artist, writer, and educator. He was born in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg, Russia), where his parents were evacuated during the Second World War. He graduated from the radio-engineering department of the Ural Polytechnic Institute (1968) and defended his thesis for the degree of Candidate of Technical Sciences (1971) (Ph.D.). After emigrating to the US (1977), he worked as a researcher at Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio), and then in two companies in Connecticut. He founded three companies and is the author of more than 60 American and international <ref 2> patents. Among his most popular inventions are a light switch with a motion sensor (US No. 4450351), an infrared medical ear thermometer (US No. 4,797,840), and an infrared thermometer for smartphones (US Nos. 8275413 and 8825112). In addition to inventions, Jacob Fraden paints oil paintings in a surrealistic style.<ref 3> His works were exhibited in Russia (1974) and the USA (2012). He authored a popular textbook on sensors, Handbook of Modern Sensors (Springer Verlag, five updated editions since 1992), and the book of short stories Adventures of an Inventor (Hurricane Books, 1996). In Russian, he writes short stories,<ref 4> which are published in various countries online and on paper. At the </nowiki>University of California (San Diego), Jacob Fraden lectures on the theory and use of sensors, as well as on the history of Renaissance art and connections between art and science. He lives in San Diego, is married, and has two children and a granddaughter.
