Jade d'Alpoim Guedes is an American anthropological archaeologist, paleoethnobotonist, and climate scientist.

Career[edit]

D'Alpoim Guedes received her undergraduate degrees in France, at INALCO and Paris-Sorbonne University, where she earned degrees in Tibetan & Himalayan Studies, art history & archaeology, and sinology respectively. She earned her Ph.D at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[1]

D'Alpoim Guedes was a Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Study Graduate Fellow in 2012.[2] She was an assistant professor of anthropology at Washington State University, from 2013 to 2017. In 2016, d'Alpoim Guedes was a US National Academy of Sciences's Frontier in Science Kavli Foundation Fellows. Since 2017, she has been an assistant professor at both University of California, San Diego and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.[3]

D'Alpoim Guedes co-founded www.paleobot.org in 2009, a free online reference collection site for paleobotanic samples.


Her work applies open source climate data modeling techniques with archeological data to study ancient agricultural adaptive practices in high altitude regions such as the Tibetan plateau and southwest China.[4] She has also engaged in cross-field public debate between anthropology and other social science disciplines, notably economics.[5]

Since 2017, d’Alpoim Guedes has served on the board of the Institute for Field Research. She is a member of the International Government Affairs Committee of the Society for American Archaeology and the secretary for the Society of Ethnobiology.[6]
