The Jaguars-Steelers rivalry is a professional American football rivalry between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League (NFL)'s AFC.
The first game of the rivalry was played on October 8, 1995, at EverBank Field (then Jacksonville Municipal Stadium) in Jacksonville, Florida. In Week 6 of 1995, the Jaguars were looking for their second win as a franchise in 1995. They won 20-16. The rivalry intensified during the 2007-2008 playoffs, when the 10-6 Steelers, champions of the AFC North division, hosted the second place Jaguars at 11-5. The Steelers almost came back from down 28-10 after the 3rd quarter to win, but they fell just short losing 31-29. The Jaguars lost in the Divisional playoffs to the Patriots 31-20. The Jaguars beat the Steelers in a recent playoff game during the 2017 Divisional playoffs 45-42, again holding on to a big lead. They lost in the Championship to the Patriots 24-20.
History[edit]
1990s[edit]
In 1993, the NFL awarded expansion franchises to the cities of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Jacksonville, Florida. The Charlotte franchise would become the Carolina Panthers of the National Football Conference, and the Jacksonville franchise would become the Jacksonville Jaguars of the American Football Conference. The Jaguars would compete in the Central division of the AFC along with the Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Oilers, and Pittsburgh Steelers. Since 1995, the Jaguars have played most of their home games at what was originally called Jacksonville Municipal Stadium (now named TIAA Bank Field) on the site of the original Gator Bowl stadium.
On October 8, 1995, the Jaguars played their first game ever against the Steelers. The Steelers had existed since 1933, but didn't become a historically great team until the Super Bowl Era. Ever since then, they have won 6 super bowls. The Jaguars won the first game at home 20-16, but failed to win in Pittsburgh with a 24-7 loss. The Jaguars would split the series with the Steelers in 1996, 1997, and 1998. The Jaguars won 24-9 at home and than lost 28-3 in Pittsburgh in 1996. In 1997, the Jags won first 30-21, but than lost in overtime 23-17. And in 1998, the Steelers won first 30-15, but than lost 21-3 in Jacksonville. However in 1999 when the Jaguars were 14-2, they swept the Steelers, and won by scores of 17-3 in Pittsburgh and 20-6 in Jacksonville. The Jaguars lead the 1990s 6-4 in the regular season.
2000s[edit]
The Jaguars and Steelers were in their same division the first couple years of the 2000s. In 2000, the Steelers pulled out a win in Jacksonville, 24-13. The Jaguars responded with a 34-24 win in Pittsburgh later that year. They split the series again in 2001, the last year they were in the same division. The Jaguars easily won in Week 1, 21-3. But again, the Steelers responded, winning 20-7 at home.
2002 was the first year that they played once against each other. The Steelers won 25-23. 2 years later in 2004, the Steelers would win their third straight game against the Jaguars, winning 17-16. The Jaguars would respond in 2005 and 2006 winning in overtime 23-17 and 9-0 not in overtime. 2007 was a big year for the Jaguars. They made the postseason for the first time until 2017. They won in the regular season against the Steelers, and then won in the Wild Card classic game 31-29, when the Steelers nearly came back from down 28-10 in the 3rd quarter. The Jaguars would lose to the Steelers in 2008.
2010s[edit]
The Jaguars and Steelers have played few games in the 2010s, but a good amount of them have been classics. They lost a close one in 2011 in Pittsburgh, 17-13. They then dropped another low scoring game in 2014, 17-9. But in 2017, when the Jaguars made their first postseason birth since 2007, they destroyed the Steelers in the regular season game 30-9. Ben Roethlisberger through 5 interceptions in that Week 5 game. In the Divisional round game, the Jaguars again got of to a great start leading 21-0. The Steelers fought back and made it 28-21. When the Jaguars were up 35-21, and it was a 4th and 5 for the Steelers, you thought the game could be over. But Ben Roethlisberger launched a long touchdown pass to Antonio Brown, to make it 35-28. Blake Bortles responded by throwing a touchdown pass to Tommy Bohanon on the next drive making it 42-28. The Steelers almost came back, but fell just short losing 45-42.
The Jaguars and Steelers played a highly anticipated game in Week 11 of 2018. Even though the Jaguars were 3-6, many expected their defense to come back and shut down the Steelers. It looked like that in the 3rd quarter, when the Jaguars lead 16-0, and having Ben Roethlisberger throw 3 picks, but the Steelers came back. They scored a late touchdown in the 3rd quarter to make it 16-6. They then scored another before the 2 minute warning making in 16-13. They had one drive left. Even though James Connor dropped a touchdown catch on that drive, Ben Roethlisberger ran a 1 yd td, to win it for the Steelers 20-16.
