The Panthers–Seahawks rivalry[2] is a National Football League (NFL) series between the Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks.[3] Both franchises have combined for 5 Super Bowl appearances, 23 playoff appearances, and 16 division championships (10 for Seattle and 6 for Carolina).[3][4] Seattle leads the series 9–4.[5]

In 2016, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll claimed the Panthers were not a rival.[6] USA Today claimed in 2019 that a rivalry no longer existed between the two teams[7] and a Seahawks USA Today blog in 2019 gave the Panthers only an honourable mention for biggest rivals, saying "this isn't too much of a rivalry."[8]

History[edit]

The Panthers and Seahawks first played each other in the 2000 regular season, with Carolina winning. The first playoff matchup between both teams dates to the 2005 NFC Championship game.[9] The Seahawks won, defeating the Panthers 34–14 and advancing to Super Bowl XL.[10][11] The teams later met in the divisional rounds of the playoffs in 2014 and 2015, with the victor of each match eventually going on to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.[12]
