Development[edit]

On 10 February 2022, Sun Pictures officially announced their next film starring Rajinikanth and to be directed by Nelson. As Rajinikanth's 169th film, it was tentatively titled Thalaivar 169.[1][2] On 16 February, it was announced that Manoj Paramahamsa would handle the cinematography, in his second collaboration with Nelson after Beast.[3] The title Jailer was announced on 17 June 2022, with the posters revealing Nelson as the sole writer, debunking earlier reports that K. S. Ravikumar would be writing the screenplay from a story by Rajinikanth.[4][5]

Casting[edit]

In May 2022, there were reports suggesting that Kannada actor Shiva Rajkumar would be seen in a pivotal role.[6] That speculation was confirmed the following month. It marks Shiva Rajkumar's debut in Tamil cinema.[7]

Filming[edit]

The film was officially launched in March 2022.[8] Principal photography is set to commence in August 2022.[9][10]

Music[edit]

The music is composed by Anirudh in his third collaboration with Rajinikanth, after Petta and Darbar and fourth collaboration with Nelson after Kolamaavu Kokila, Doctor and Beast.[11]

Release[edit]

The film is planned to be released theatrically in the second quarter of 2023.[12]
