Jake Gaither Golf Course is public golf course in Tallahassee, Florida. Established in 1953, it was Tallahassee's only golf course for African Americans in the Jim Crow era. Following renovations in 2021, the course was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 2022.
History
Prior to the opening of Jake Gaither Golf Course, all golf courses in Tallahassee were operated by private clubs. African Americans were not permitted to play at these clubs and could only caddie. In December 1953, the city commision announced a new public park named after Jake Gaither, who was head coach of the Florida A&M University (FAMU) football team at the time.
The nine-hole, par 36 course opened in the winter of 1956. (research flooding issues and put here)
Jake Gaither was the FAMU golf team's home course through the 1970s.
In 2022, Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd announced that the course was being listed on the National Register of Historic Places after being nominated in 2017.[2][3]
