James Black (18 September 1873 – 16 May 1928) was a New Zealand cricketer who played for Otago.
Biography[edit]
Born in Dunedin on 18 September 1873, Black was the son of Janet and Peter Black, a timber merchant.[1][2][3]
Black made a single first-class appearance for Otago, during the 1895–86 season, against New South Wales. From the lower order, he scored 2 runs in the first innings in which he batted, and 3 not out in the second.[1]
After leaving school in 1888, Black joined the engineering firm of A. & T. Burt in Dunedin, and qualified as a chartered accountant.[2][4] He transferred to Auckland in 1904 when the firm opened a branch there, rising to become branch chief accountant and assistant manager.[2][4] He was a member of the Ponsonby Bowling Club, the Auckland Orphans' Club, and the Independent Order of Oddfellows Manchester Unity.[4][5]
Black died of a suspected heart attack shortly after arriving at work at his office in Auckland on 16 May 1928,[2][4] and was buried at Hillsborough Cemetery.[6] He was survived by his wife, Margaret Helena Black (née Corbett), to whom he was married in Dunedin on 25 April 1905, and one son.[4][6][7] Margaret Black died in 1933.[8]
