James G. Hanink is an American scholar who is the American Solidarity Party's gubernatorial candidate in the 2021 California gubernatorial recall election.[1] He is formerly Professor of Philosophy at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He writes in the areas of metaphysics, epistemology, and social thought and is long associated with the New Oxford Review.[2]
Life and career[edit]
Dr. Hanink received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He taught at Michigan State University from 1976 to 2015. His research interests include Thomism, Personalism, Jacques Maritain, Elizabeth Anscombe, and Karol Wojtyla. Hanink is the host of The Open Door podcast. He is the president of the American Maritain Association.[3]
2021 California gubernatorial campaign[edit]
On March 24, 2021, Dr. Hanink declared his candidacy for governor in California's 2021 recall election.[1]

Political positions[edit]
Dr. Hanink is running on a platform that espouses the political ideology of christian democracy, which emphasizes G. K. Chesterton-style distributism as an alternative to capitalism, a consistent life ethic, universal healthcare, climate and environmental stewardship, social justice and reconciliation, and a more peaceful world. His positions are similar to those espoused by other Christian Democratic parties in many European and Latin American countries.
Dr. Hanink subscribes to a consistent life ethic which opposes abortion, euthanasia, and the death penalty, while advocating for progressive and social justice issues. He is anti-abortion.[5]
