Jimmy LaRose (born 'James Paul LaRose'; September 2nd, 1967 in Kingston, NY), is an American author, entrepreneur & motivational speaker with over 30 years experience in fundraising and development.[1] His latest book, "Re-imagining Philanthropy", released in 2015, is currently listed on BookAuthority as the 39th out of 100 top philanthropy books of all time.[2] LaRose is the founder of the National Development Institute in 1990, and co-founder of the National Association of Nonprofit Organizations and Executives (NANOE).[3]

Jimmy became popular for his controversial view on non-profits, stating that "Money is more important than mission (or Ministry)".[4] In his book, he goes on to talk about how charities need to better serve the clients of a non-profit, in which he identifies donors as volunteers rather than individuals receiving services.[5] Even before completion of his book, Jimmy was featured on The Chronicle of Philanthropy in an article by Holly Hall which spoke about his views on how "feasibility studies for capital campaigns are a waste of money.[6]

Educational Background

LaRose initially graduated college with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Tennessee Temple University and Word of Life Bible Institute. He then studied for his Master’s degree from Liberty University. Upon completion of his Masters degree, Jimmy went on to get his doctorate in Philanthropic Studies from Ecumenical University. He has also received additional education at the Association of Fundraising Professionals Faculty Training Academy and National Planned Giving Institute through the College of William & Mary.

Foundations & Contributions

In 1991, LaRose founded and is CEO of Development Systems International (DSI), which is an initiative of the 501(c)(3) corporation National Development Institute (NDI) that ensures nonprofits have professional access to fundraising through Major Gifts Ramp-Up.[7] DSI has over 16,000 alumni members and has raised over $1 billion (USD) since inception.[8]

Jimmy is the founder of CNE, CDE & CNC™ Credentialing, providing NANOE members training and certifications for nonprofit leadership. He also started DonorScope™, which is an online prospect research platform used by charities to identify donors who make large donations to charities.

LaRose has also served as a specialist with the U.S. State Department’s Speakers Bureau, traveling worldwide to promote philanthropy and civil society in developing countries.

Lastly, Jimmy is an active contributor to InsideCharity™, a nonprofit news source and online magazine that curates news from respected nonprofit media outlets.

Reception

While some find LaRose aggressive and cavalier, according to Louis Fawcett "No one understands better how to raise money for nonprofits than Jimmy LaRose. Therefore, no one understands better how to change and save lives...".[9] LaRose argues that the client of a non-profit is actually the donor, volunteer or advocate, rather than the individual receiving the services.

Jimmy's critics have often described him as unrealistic. In response to Re-Imagining Philanthropy, Christopher Marlin-Warfield claims that by having a paid board in non-profits, that it "creates a risk that board members will see service as an opportunity for self-enrichment".[10] Coates Madsen said in an interview with MiBiz, "One of the hallmarks for the nonprofit sector in the United States is that these organizations with public purposes are led by people with a dedication to the mission… We don’t want to encourage situations where there are conflicts of interest in any way".[11]

Personal life

LaRose married Kristi[12] on the 5th of January, 2014 and currently lives in Lexington, South Carolina.
