The Honourable Justice James Stephen Stellios is an Australian judge of the Federal Court of Australia, serving since 19 December 2024.[1] His appointment was among eight announced by the Commonwealth Attorney-General on 6 December 2024.[2]
Early life and education
Justice Stellios graduated from the Australian National University with a Bachelor of Economics in 1991 and a Bachelor of Laws (First-Class Honours, University Medal) in 1995. He later obtained a Master of Laws from Cornell Law School and a Doctor of Philosophy from the ANU.[1]
Academic and legal career
Before his appointment, Stellios was Professor and Head of School at the ANU College of Law and practised at the New South Wales Bar (called 2013).[1] He is the author of The Federal Judicature: Chapter III of the Constitution (2nd ed., 2020) and of the 7th edition of Zines and Stellios’s The High Court and the Constitution.[1][3]
Judicial career
The Attorney-General announced Justice Stellios’ appointment on 6 December 2024, with his commission commencing on 19 December 2024 in the Sydney Registry.[2][1] A ceremonial sitting of a Full Court to welcome Justice Stellios was held on 21 February 2025; the transcript is published by the Court.[4]
