James W. Shue
James William Shue (May 28, 1936 – May 24, 2013) is an American lawyer, business executive and Republican Party politician, and is the father of actors Elisabeth Shue and Andrew Shue.
Shue grew up in Livingston and West Caldwell, New Jersey, and was the senior class president and Boys State representative. He is a graduate of Harvard University and Columbia Law School. He taught school in Nigeria in 1962 and 1963, and worked for the Model Cities program.[1] He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Butzbach, Germany as second lieutenant for two years.
In 1970, Shue became the Republican nominee for the U.S. House of Representatives in New Jersey's 11th district. He was endorsed by the Essex County Republican organization and ran unopposed in the primary election. His opponent was Joseph Minish, a former labor leader who was seeking his fifth term in the House. Shue campaigned as a liberal Republican, disagreeing with Minish over the Vietnam War and was endorsed by SANE, an anti-nuclear organization. He criticized Minish for not taking aggressive stands on key national issues. After becoming a candidate, he endorsed Kenneth A. Gibson for Mayor of Newark against the two-term incumbent, Hugh Addonizio, and was endorsed by an African-American Newark City Councilman, Rev. Dennis Westbooks.[2] Minish won that race by a wide margin, 68,075 (68.46%) to 31,369 (32.54%).[3] Shue never sought public office again.
Shue worked as a lawyer and public defender, and later as a real estate developer. He was the president of International Food and Beverage Corporation, a a manufacturer and distributor in St. Petersburg, Russia.[4] He moved from South Orange, New Jersey to Maine in 1992, and became a leader of Citizens for Quality Education in Hampden, Maine.[5]
