James Zemlin (called "Jim Zemlin") is Executive Director of The Linux Foundation. The Linux Foundation is the non-profit which supports the Linux operating system and other important Free and Open-Source Software projects. The home website of The Linux Foundation describes his leadership participation in three of the latest technology trends: "mobile computing", "cloud computing", and "open source software".[1]
Jim Zemlin also sits on the boards of the Global Economic Symposium, Open Source For America, and the Chinese Open Source Promotion Union.[2]

Zemlin learned to love computing technology from his father, a computer programmer, while spending his formative years in Minnesot .[3] As a young man m Zemlin worked at Western Wireless (later acquired by Deutsche Telekom to become T-Mobile USA).[4]

Shortly after the founding of Corio Corporation, Jim Zemlin became a member of the management team there. At that time Corio provided the "Corio Applications on Demand(TM)" platform to deliver enterprise applications from independent software vendors as a service for a fixed monthly fee, an early example of Software as a Service (SAS).[5]
Subsequent job posts have included Vice President of Marketing at Covalent Technologies and Executive Director at The Free Standards Group.[6]
Recent career[edit]
In 2004 Zemlin became Executive Director of The Free Standards Group (FSG)[7] which merged with Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) in 2007 to form the Linux Foundation, with Zemlin becoming executive director there. [8] [9]
As Executive Director of the Linux Foundation, Jim Zemlin has participated as a keynote speaker at a large number of technology industry events.[10] These appearances have sometimes evoked further commentary in the Free Software/OpenSource (FOSS) community. [11] [12]. During his tenure as executive director, Mr. Zemlin has also posted a blogging article to defend important institutional changes undertaken at The Linux Foundation [13] which have been controversial. [14]
