Jamila Souffrant

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Jamila Souffrant is a Jamaican-American financial author and podcaster, and a leader within the FIRE movement.[1][2][3][4][5] She is best known for saving large amounts of money and for featuring a more diverse range of stories on her podcast than other personal finance podcasts.[6][7][8][9][10][11] Her podcast Journey to Launch frequently appears on lists of best personal finance podcasts.[12][13]

Life

Souffrant is married and has three children, and lives in Brooklyn, New York.[14] She is the daughter of a single immigrant mother, which she says shaped her views about money.[15]

Work

Souffrant is a certified financial educator and financial expert.[16][17][18][19] Her tips on saving money are featured in high-profile media outlets like Good Morning America and CNBC.[20][21] Souffrant bought her first property at age 22, right out of college, an act she said set her up to succeed financially.[22][23] Later she created the Journey to Launch blog and podcast to help others replicate her financial success.[24][25] She has saved large amounts of money, putting her on track to retire by age 40, in line with the ideals of the FIRE movement.[26][27] However, she later announced she was not planning to retire early, choosing the entrepreneurship path instead.[28]

Souffrant argues that early retirement is not accessible to everyone, contrary to the assertions of the FIRE movement, but that everyone can gain more flexibility by following FIRE principles of saving and investing at a high rate.[29] She also argues that people with children can still save at a high rate, especially in big cities where many free community programs are available to families.[30]

Journey to Launch has won numerous awards including the 2020 Plutus Award for Personal Finance Podcast of the Year.[31]

Souffrant announced in 2022 that she is writing a forthcoming book to be published with Hanover Square Press, in what Publishers Marketplace called a "significant deal."[32]
