Jamitha Teacher is an Islamic renaissance leader, freethinker, and rationalist from Kerala, India. She is currently the secretary of the Quran Sunnath Society. She is the first woman to lead the Jumu'ah prayers in India.[1][2][3]

Biography

Born into a Sunni orthodox family, Jamitha was engaged in learning and teaching Islamic scriptures including the Quran and Hadees. She took the profession of an Islamic teacher, but later, due to threats from the Mahal committee at Trivandrum, she was forced to relocate to Kozhikode, where she was inspired by the teachings of Chekannur Maulavi.[4][5][6]

Quran Sunnah Society was founded by Chekannur Maulavi, who went missing after being abducted in 1993, to bring about progressiveness within the Islam religion in Kerala. In 2010 Jamitha was invited to this society, and at present she is the general secretary of the Quran Sunnah Society. Quran Sunnah Society, under Jamitha, is fighting for equal rights for women in Islam. They are also at the forefront of fighting against harmful beliefs in Islam.[7][8][9]

Due to life threats and other blackmail from the Islamic community, Jamitha left Islam and became a rationalist and Islamic critic[10]

First women Imam in India

In 2018, Jamitha Teacher led Friday Jumu'ah prayers, marking the first time a woman imam led prayers in India. This incident led to much debate inside and outside Islam in India. About 80 people, including women, attended the prayers led by the woman Imam.[11][12][13]

Life threats

Jamitha Teacher has faced many life threats because of her activities to reform Islam in India, particularly to fight for the rights of women in Islam.[14]

ISIS agents’ plot to assassinate Jamitha Teacher

Jamitha Teacher has survived many death threats from the orthodox Islamic community in India. She received a death threat from ISIS in August 2021. ISIS planned to kill her. The NIA has arrested two women IS agents, Misha Siddiq(23) and Shifa Haris(27), who planned to kill Jamitha. NIA reported that these two women were trained in a foreign country and returned to India. They formed a team, and the secret plan was to kill Jamitha. Misha Siddique has very close ties with ISIS. They were operating under the direction of Muhammad Ameen alias Abu Yahya, who was taken into custody by NIA in March[15][16]
