Jan-Ulrich Sobisch

Jan-Ulrich Sobisch is associate professor of Tibetan Studies who worked until 2016 at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, where he taught indigenous literary Tibetan and Buddhism.

Early life and education[edit]

Sobisch studied Tibetology at Hamburg University, graduating in 1992.

Career[edit]

Sobisch worked in Germany at Hamburg University and at Ludwig-Maximillians-University, Munich.

Sobisch's research focuses on Tibetan Buddhism from the 12th c. onwards, Tibetan manuscripts, and the teachings of the ‘Bri-gung bKa’-brgyud-pa tradition.

Sobisch has published a number of articles in peer reviewed journals and contributed chapters to books about Tibetology, including the teachings of the Sa Skya tradition.[1] Some of his writing is about the difference between Tibetan and western values.[2][3] His works are held in libraries worldwide.[4] He has also studied and written about aspects of Tibetan Buddhism.[5]

In 2014 Sobisch authored a petition against cutbacks to post-secondary education in Denmark which was signed by more than 1,700 educators.[6] In 2016 he himself was laid off when the University of Copenhagen closed its Tibetan Studies department.[7].[8][9]

At about the same time, he won the Humboldt Prize for 2016, a 60,000 euro research grant.[8][10] He conducted research for a book project at the Center for Religious Studies at Ruhr University Bochum.[11]

He maintains a blog on the principle treatise of the founder of the ‘Bri-gung-pa, sKyob-pa ‘Jig-rten-gsum-mgon (1143-1217).
