Life

Jan Bommerez was born in Belgium and he received his business degree from the Leuven University in 1974.[3] He moved to the United States and resides in California since 1995.[4]

Main works and concepts

Jan Bommerez has authored and co-authored a number of works. In Can You Teach a Caterpillar to Fly? he discusses the concepts of personal development, transformation and transformational leadership,[5] in contrast to the concept of change management.[6] To him ‘leadership is a state of consciousness’ and transformational leadership is about ‘becoming what you really are’.[5] According to Bommerez, human transformation happens only when a paradigm shift takes place. 'If you change, you will remain within the same existing paradigms; whereas transformation is about developing fundamentally new beliefs and views.'[7]

In the book Flow and Peak Performance in Business, as well as in Minder moeten, meer flow (English: Less must, more flow) Bommerez examines the concept of flow, that consists of letting go of the defense mechanisms and being open to experience.[8] He also proposes to add ‘congruence’ as a seventh factor to the six established factors that constitute the ‘flow experience’, as described by the psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. By ‘congruence’, Bommerez means remaining true to one's values and principles.[9]
